Amazon Invades India With Kindle Store and E-Readers

Amazon has opened up the "India Content Store" on the Amazon.com website, where it now offers over 1 million Kindle books. Additionally, Kindles are now available in retail stores.

The Kindle was already available in India before this, and Kindle devices shipped from the US. Customers could set their region as India. However, the Indian store now has better integration with the country.

The Indian Kindle Store lists prices of books in Rupees (INR). Under the "Buy a Kindle" section, the only visible models at this time are:

  • Kindle (fourth-generation)
  • Kindle Keyboard 3G
  • Kindle DX

The Kindle Touch seems to be missing, although it should be possible to ship from the US with no problems. They ship to a lot of countries. Similarly, the non-3G Kindle Keyboard seems to be missing. But there were news recently about discontinuation of certain models which may point to new models coming out anytime.

Kindle 4 is also available in the outlets of the nationwide electronics retailer Croma for Rs. 6,999 ($126).

Amazon started selling a variety of products in India via Junglee.com a few months ago like it does on Amazon.com and its international counterparts. All Kindle and books related links from Jungle redirect to the Indian Amazon storefront.
